The Author Blog

I’ve been throwing stuff into the forum more or less at random.  It has been brought to my attention that this is a WordPress web site and WordPress is designed for blogging.  So from now on I’m going to post my comments to this page so everything will be a little more organized.

I hope!

I don’t really have a writerly comment to post. But it’s election day in some of the states today: Indiana is holding a primary and North Carolina is voting on gay marriage. I’ve written elsewhere on this site about Southerners’ hate and I don’t remember if I mentioned that we hate gays or not, but we do. If these state referenda on gay marriage are an indicator, EVERYONE hates gays. Yet national polls show a majority of Americans support the right of anyone crazy enough to get married to do so, including gays. My mother called a marriage license a license to fight. I don’t know about that, but I think the tax and inheritance laws should allow me to claim anyone as a dependent that I am supporting and my partner – male, female, Martian – should be able to inherit my vast fortune. But that’s just me.

Not a big surprise, but NC voters passed yet another ban on gay marriage. They had one already, but you just can’t hammer the gays hard enough or often enough, can you?

The worst news of the election was the OVERWHELMING defeat of Dick Lugar in Indiana by a Tea Party stalwart who PROMISED more partisanship bickering if he wins the general election in November. Lugar was expected to lose, but no one thought he’d be trounced by more than 20 points. The Senate loses one of its lions; Hoosiers lose a leadership-position senator; America loses one of the men who did the most to keep nuclear materials out of the hands of al-Qaeda and the other loonies who would like to detonate a nuke on US soil. The 1992 Nunn-Lugar act was DIRECTLY responsible for buying up nuclear material from the Eastern Bloc when the former Soviet Union collapsed. N-L helped the Russians tighten security at their internal nuclear and biological weapons facilities and bought loose nuclear weapons and components from Ukraine and Georgia as well as those hotbeds of democracy Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus. Yet another centrist Republican bites the dust, replaced by a hard right, Jim DeMint Tea Bag favorite.

So long, Senator Lugar. We’ll miss you, sir.

I posted a new essay with the disingenuous title of “And Now a Word From Our Sponsor.” It’s really a musing on the nature of Satan. This is the back story to my second novel which is currently unnamed though I’m off to a pretty good start – over 7,000 words. I’m still marketing the first Drew Wilson book but I’ve set aside the further adventures of Drew and his merry band of serial killers and the profilers who chase them for a lighter fare.

As I mention in the essay one of my guilty pleasures is the CW network’s TV show Supernatuaral which I DVR off the TNT network’s reruns and time shift to the weekends. I admit I have wasted entire Saturdays catching up on the efforts of the Winchester brothers, Dean and Sam, to hunt and kill the things that go bump in the night.

The show got me thinking about demons, Satan, angels, and the role of good and evil. This thinking inspired me to imagine a world where God has taken an extended vacation, Satan left in charge though lazy bastard that he is, he’s split, too. That leaves a bureaucracy of lesser angels in charge: pushing paper, writing those TPM reports, and holding team building events.
